Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're planning ahead or arranging a ceremony now, it's natural to have questions. Here are some of the ones I'm asked most often.

What exactly does a celebrant do?

A celebrant works with you to create and lead a ceremony that reflects the person or occasion being honoured. That might be a funeral, a memorial, a naming ceremony, or another type of milestone. My role is to help you shape something personal and meaningful and then deliver it with care on the day.

How far in advance should we book you?

For funerals, I may be able to help at short notice, including with just a few days’ notice, though this isn’t typical and I prefer a little more time as it helps with planning. For other ceremonies, like naming ceremonies or memorials, the more notice the better. Whatever your timeline, it’s always worth asking. If I’m not available, I’ll try to point you to someone who is.

Can you work alongside a funeral director or do you work independently?

I often work alongside funeral directors and I’m very happy to fit in with whatever arrangements are already in place. If you’re not using a funeral director, that’s also fine, I can help guide the ceremony planning from my side.

What areas do you cover?

I’m based near Colchester and mainly cover Essex, Suffolk and the surrounding areas, but I’m always open to travelling a little further if I can.

Can we meet you before booking?

Yes, I’m happy to meet for a no-pressure chat (in person or by video call) before you decide. It’s really important that you feel comfortable and confident in who you’re working with.

What happens if you're not available on the day due to illness or an emergency?

If something unexpected stops me from being there, I’ll do everything I can to arrange another trusted celebrant to step in. I’ll make sure they have the full script and all the details, so the ceremony can still go ahead as planned.

Are your ceremonies religious?

No, not unless you’d like them to be. Celebrant-led ceremonies are usually non-religious, but I can include prayers, hymns or spiritual elements if that’s something that matters to you or your family.

Can we include religious or spiritual elements if we want to?

Yes, absolutely. If there are readings, prayers, blessings or rituals you’d like to include, I’ll make sure they’re handled with care and respect.

What if we're not sure what we want yet, can you help us decide?

Yes, that’s a big part of what I do. I’ll ask a few gentle questions to get a sense of what feels right, and then offer suggestions to help shape the tone, content and structure of the ceremony.

Will we get to read or approve what you say beforehand?

Yes, I’ll send you a full draft ahead of time so you can read through it and suggest any changes. Nothing will be read out on the day without your approval.

How much does it cost?

Funerals and memorials start from £240, with naming ceremonies from £250. Other ceremonies are priced from £75. I’ll always confirm the price before any work begins.
